For a Barrie winter, specify a window with a U-factor of 1.22 W/m²·K or lower, or an Energy Rating (ER) of 34 or higher — the current ENERGY STAR Canada thresholds — and push to 1.05 / ER 40 on exposed and north-facing walls. Everything else on the spec sheet either supports those two numbers or is decoration.
Natural Resources Canada puts windows, doors and skylights at up to 25% of a home’s heat loss. In a region where the heating season runs the better part of seven months, that share is where a replacement project either pays for itself or does not. Here is how to read the numbers.
What the code requires, and why it is only a floor
Ontario’s 2024 Building Code (O. Reg. 163/24, in force since 1 January 2025) keeps Supplementary Standard SB-12 as the prescriptive energy path for houses. SB-12 splits the province at 5,000 heating degree days: Zone 1 below, Zone 2 at or above.
Barrie’s heating degree days fall below that threshold, placing the city in Zone 1, where the prescriptive maximum window U-value is 1.6 W/m²·K. HDD figures are tabulated municipality by municipality in Supplementary Standard SB-1 — confirm yours with the building department if your project sits near the boundary.
Take two things from that. SB-12 governs new construction and additions, not a like-for-like replacement in an existing house, so nobody is forcing your hand. And 1.6 is a compliance floor written for whole-house trade-offs, not a shopping target. ENERGY STAR sits roughly a quarter better than it.
U-factor, ER and SHGC: what the three numbers mean
U-factor
The rate heat escapes through the whole assembly — glass, sealed-unit edge, sash and frame together — measured in W/m²·K. Lower is better. In imperial, 1.22 W/m²·K equals 0.21 Btu/h·ft²·°F, and 1.05 equals 0.18.
Watch for centre-of-glass figures quoted as though they were whole-window figures. Centre of glass always looks better because it excludes the frame and the perimeter of the sealed unit, which is exactly where losses concentrate. Ask which one you are being shown.
Energy Rating (ER)
ER is Canada’s own single-number rating, defined in CSA A440.2. It nets three things over an average heating season: solar heat gained through the glass, heat lost by conduction, and heat lost to air leakage. Higher is better, and unlike U-factor it credits a window for the free heat it collects.
The practical consequence: a south-facing unit can carry a strong ER on a merely decent U-factor, because the sun does part of the work. On a north wall there is no sun to bank, so U-factor is the number that governs comfort.
SHGC
Solar heat gain coefficient — the share of the sun’s energy the window admits, on a 0 to 1 scale. In a heating-dominated climate you generally want it higher on sun-facing walls, not lower. That runs against the instinct most people bring from air-conditioning-first marketing.
ENERGY STAR Canada in 2026
ENERGY STAR for fenestration in Canada runs on the Version 5.0 technical specification, effective since 1 January 2020 and administered by NRCan. Unlike earlier versions it applies one national criterion instead of separate climate zones A through D.
- Certification: U-factor of 1.22 W/m²·K or lower, or ER of 34 or higher.
- Air leakage: infiltration and exfiltration both at or below 1.5 L/s/m².
- ENERGY STAR Most Efficient (2025 criteria): U-factor of 1.05 W/m²·K or lower, or ER of 40 or higher.
Note the word “or”. A window can certify on ER alone with an unremarkable U-factor, or on U-factor alone with modest solar gain. When a quote says “ENERGY STAR” and nothing else, ask which of the two it cleared, and by how much.

Double, triple, and what the gas fill actually does
A double unit with a soft-coat Low-E and an argon fill typically lands at or near the ENERGY STAR line. A triple with two coatings and argon in both cavities is what reaches Most Efficient territory.
The jump from single to double glazing is enormous. Double to triple is real but incremental, and it shows up as a warmer inner pane and a quieter room more than as a dramatic change on the gas bill. Where it earns its price:
- North and northwest elevations with no solar gain to offset losses.
- Bedrooms, and any room where you sit close to the glass.
- Wind-exposed sites — shoreline properties on Kempenfelt Bay and Lake Simcoe take a beating that sheltered subdivisions do not.
- Any window that currently frosts or streams with condensation in January.
Where it rarely earns it: small sheltered openings, garages, and south-facing picture units where the third pane trims the solar gain you actually want. Also budget for weight — the glass alone in a triple weighs half again as much as a double, which matters for large casement hardware.
On gas fill: argon is cheap, standard and worth having. Krypton performs better in narrow cavities under about 10 mm, so it belongs in slim triple units, not as a blanket upgrade at three times the price. Treat precise fill-percentage claims with mild scepticism — the seal that keeps the gas in matters more than the number it started at. The warm edge spacer: the cheapest real upgrade
The spacer holds the panes apart around the perimeter of the sealed unit. In older windows it is aluminum — an excellent conductor, which is precisely why frost forms along the edge of the glass first.
A warm edge spacer in stainless steel, structural foam or a composite cuts that thermal bridge, raises edge-of-glass temperature and pushes back the point at which condensation begins. It improves whole-window U-factor modestly and, with a better dual seal, holds the argon longer.

Low-E coatings and which wall gets what
Low-emissivity coatings are microscopically thin metallic-oxide layers that reflect long-wave heat while passing visible light. In a sealed double unit the glass surfaces are numbered 1 to 4 from outside in.
Placement changes behaviour. On surface 3 — the inner pane facing the cavity — the coating reflects room heat back inside while letting more winter sun through: the heating-climate choice. On surface 2 it intercepts solar energy before it enters, which suits a west wall that bakes in July.
A workable specification for a Barrie house:
- South and southeast: higher SHGC, roughly 0.40–0.55. Free heat from December to March is worth more than a marginally lower U-factor.
- North: lowest U-factor available. SHGC barely matters without direct sun — this is where triple glazing pays.
- West and southwest: a solar-control coating if the room overheats in summer; otherwise treat it like south.
- Bathrooms and stairwells: low U-factor and a good warm edge. These rooms show condensation first.
Any competent supplier can mix coatings across elevations on a single order. Few homeowners ask, so few quotes offer it. Ask when you compare our window range against anyone else’s.
CSA A440 and NAFS: the standard nobody quotes
Energy is only half the specification. Ontario’s Building Code sends windows to NAFS — AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 — with performance grades selected using CSA A440S1, the Canadian Supplement, according to where the unit will actually be installed. Those grades cover resistance to wind load, water penetration and structural load.
Why that matters here: a window can hold an excellent ER and still be under-specified for an exposed shoreline, where driving rain and wind pressure do the damage, not conduction. Ask for the energy number and the NAFS performance grade. A serious supplier has both on file.
CSA A440.2 is the companion energy standard that defines how U-factor, SHGC and ER get calculated, with A440.3 as its user guide. It is the reason two manufacturers’ numbers are comparable at all.
What actually saves money — and what does not
Pays for itself:
- Perimeter air sealing. Low-expansion foam, backer rod, a continuous interior air seal and a drained, flashed exterior. A lab rating is a ceiling; the installation decides how close you get to it.
- Warm edge spacer and a sound dual seal.
- Matching the coating to the elevation rather than ordering one glass package for the whole house.
- Fewer, larger units where the layout allows — frame is always the weakest thermal component, so less frame per square metre helps.
Mostly marketing:
- Whole-window “R-values”. Canadian fenestration is rated in U-factor; converting invites a bogus comparison against wall insulation.
- Krypton in standard-width cavities.
- Precise payback promises. NRCan’s 25% figure is the ceiling for what glazing can address at all. Anyone quoting an exact number of years off your bill is guessing.
- Decorative grilles inside the sealed unit sold as an efficiency feature. They are an aesthetic choice, nothing more.
Rebates and tax in 2026: current status
Be careful with older articles here — most of the programs they cite are gone.

A U-factor is measured on a unit in a test chamber. In your wall it competes with an out-of-square opening, a settled sill and whatever the last installer left behind. Every rating on this page is a ceiling that a poor install will pull you well below.
